Spring is in the air and Easter is fast approaching - and that gives us a great excuse to indulge in chocolate eggs and the perfect opportunity to get crafting. If you're looking to create your own Easter decorations this year, then allow us to recommend our sewing pattern for this utterly charming hen soft toy.

You can use any fabric you want to create your clucking hen - so it's great chance to use up discarded scraps of fabric or even upcycle old clothes you can't give to charity.

Add to your mantlepiece, window or Easter table to create a pretty Easter display. The soft toy is also a sweet addition to any Easter egg hunt you may be planning. And not only that, it also makes a handy paperweight.

If you're looking for other crafting ideas this spring to enjoy either on your own or with the family over the holidays, check out these Easter egg pots and these Easter chick pom poms - perfect to keep your hen company.

How to make the Easter hen decoration

  1. From your fabric, cut two rectangles measuring 14cm x 16cm.
  2. From the red felt, cut two 'combs', using the templates below, and two strips measuring 18cm x 2cm each for legs.
  3. Cut the legs into three strips to within 1cm of the top. Plait the legs to within 2cm of the bottom. Stitch securely.
  4. From the yellow felt, cut two 2.5cm squares. Fold each square in half to make beak pieces. Tack the beak and the combs to one rectangle as shown in image 1, below.
  5. With right sides together, pin and stitch the two rectangles together on three sides, taking 1cm seam allowances and leaving a gap in one side for turning through. Fold so that the side seams match, and pin across the lower edge.
  6. Slip the legs inside at corners and stitch across the bottom, as in image 2, below. Turn the hen right side out. Sew on the small black beads for eyes. Fill with rice and sew up the gap in the stitching.
